Sugar Grace Puppy Face: The Tale of Our Discount Beagle
Our journey to find the perfect dog led us to a hunter selling his "reject" beagle puppies - the ones who couldn't hunt. Little did we know our perfect match was waiting among them, wearing the price tag of a hunting dog dropout.
When we walked into the hunter's house, we were greeted by a puppy no bigger than a fist, who ran straight up to us and promptly peed on the floor in excitement. I wasn't convinced, but my husband was already smitten. When we asked the hunter how he knew she wouldn't make it as a hunting dog, he simply said, "I just know." That was all the explanation we needed for our little discount dog.
The adventure began immediately. As we started our two-hour drive home with our tiny new family member, the skies opened up with pouring rain. Then, twenty minutes into the journey, we discovered our little beagle's secret talent: getting car sick. There we were, pulled over on the side of the road in the pouring rain, cleaning up ourselves, the car, and one very sorry-looking puppy. It was our first family memory together, though perhaps not the one we'd imagined.
She came with impressive "hunting stock" papers, which seemed ironic for a reject hunting dog. But we didn't care about her pedigree - we were too busy falling in love with her sweet personality and endearing clumsiness. That's how she became "Sugar Grace Puppy Face" - Sugar for her sweetness, Grace for her remarkable ability to trip over her own feet and ears, and Puppy Face because, well, just look at her.
Those early days were filled with the usual puppy challenges. Night training tested our patience, and potty training took longer than expected (apparently, that's a beagle thing). But with each small victory and mishap, our little reject hunting dog was weaving herself more deeply into our hearts.
The biggest surprise? Our beagle turned out to be very un-beagle-like. While her hunting breed cousins are known for their vocal baying and boundless energy, Sugar Grace prefers the quieter life. She's transformed us into a more active family, even while maintaining her own relaxed approach to life. The only remnant of that first car ride is her continued distaste for vehicle adventures - some things never change.
Looking back, it seems perfect that our "reject" hunting dog turned out to be exactly what we needed. She may not have met the hunter's standards, but she exceeded all of ours. Sometimes life's best gifts come with a discount tag and a puddle on the floor.
